Requesting An Absence from Summer Training

Absences

Attendance is expected every day of Summer Training

In rare/emergency situations or extremely compelling and major personal life events, you may apply for a leave. ALL leave requests, including requests to arrive late or depart early are subject to approval. Failure to comply with the leave policy may result in failure to successfully complete Summer Training. If a CM misses more than four (excused) days for extreme circumstances, they will need to defer the corps.

Given the pace of Summer Training and our desire to make sure every corps member can take full advantage of the training opportunity, our expectation is that every corps member attends every day of Summer Training. Summer Training is an intense program, and a lot happens in a very condensed time period.  Absences can put a corps member’s development behind and will place an extra burden on fellow team members to ensure all daily teaching and lesson preparation responsibilities are accounted for.

That being said, we also realize that corps members may have planned important events that overlap with the training schedule. In an effort to strike a balance between the two, we have developed a policy that strives to respect personal commitments while maximizing training over the summer. It is your responsibility to read over our Corps Member Leave Request Policy and take a potential action.

Please take a few minutes to review, and submit a leave request if necessary by your designated deadline via your onboarding blast. All submissions will be reviewed and are subject to approval by our Summer Training team.

Weekends & 4th of July

Weekends and Monday, July 4th will be free with no programming.  You will be able to leave Summer Training after sessions and programming conclude Friday evenings.

During Summer Training

It is your responsibility to fill out an absence request form should an emergency need arise.

You will coordinate with your coach and teaching team to determine a plan for making up lost teaching and missed content sessions.

After Summer Training

You should keep in mind there will be more Teach For America professional development sessions in August, university partner classes, professional development at individual placement school sites, and continued interviewing for unplaced corps members.

You should not make any plans to leave Chicago following Summer Training until you know what the rest of the summer will look like from your school, university partner and Teach For America.
